I
was introduced to clowning more by accident than design. Bob and Joyce were new
to the New Orleans area and Joyce was looking for a job. She called my pastor,
Pastor Joe, to see if he could give her any leads. Pastor Joe referred her to
me, believing that I worked in the personnel department at a local hospital. So
Joyce called me regarding a job but ended up recruiting me as a new clown.
Clowning had never even crossed my mind. Like so many others, I am basically shy
and don’t like to put myself “out there”. But this was different. This was
ministry clowning and I figured if God wanted me to be a “goof” for Him, who was
I to argue? That was in 1999 and I’ve been at it ever since.
Since that inauspicious beginning, we have formed a troupe, The Holy Madness
Clowns, and have grown and developed in our chosen avocation. There are 8 in our
troupe and we have become the very best of friends.
Starlite, another clown in the troupe, and I have branched out into birthday
parties and corporate event clowning, doing face painting, skits, and
ballooning.
Oh, did I mention that I dragged my husband, John, into clowning, as well? It
wasn’t difficult as he’s the class clown (more like prankster) type, anyway. He
is Dusty, the happy hobo.
I have had the pleasure of attending seminars presented by “Bubba” Sikes and
Duane Laflin and Tony and Nikki Jones. One of our greatest educational
experiences was when John and I attended a Moose Caravan weekend with Tricia
Bothun, “Frosty” Little, Rex Nolan, Dave Mitchell and Chuck Sidlow. As a troupe,
we’ve also attended a “Show Me Clowns4Jesus” weekend, been to Clown Jam in
Branson and hosted two TnT Road Shows. Our alley, Crescent City Clowns # 372,
hosted the 2006 COAI Convention. It is my dream to one day go to Moose Camp for
a week of learning.
Pastor Joe was partially right. I did work in a local hospital as an LPN for 25
years. I have since retired from there to take the position as church secretary
for my home church. You couldn’t ask for a better boss.
I am excited about becoming the South Central RVP and promise to serve you to
the best of my ability. Please feel free to call me at 504-812-9003 or e- mail
me with any questions, concerns or suggestions. I’m here for you.
Peace and giggles to all!
